I had the opportunity to teach a case until this week, since I´m not currently teaching. I taught a case on regional economic development for the state of Connecticut to a group of undergraduate students.
The problem that I fist encountered was that not all students attended that particular session, and of those who did attend, only half read the case thoroughly. Another problem I had was that my first questions were very descriptive, and when a student provided an opportunity to go deeper, I did not take that opportunity to make the interaction richer.
By half the session I think I felt more confident and began to ask students more "role-playing" questions. I think that made the students also feel more involved.
One thing that surprised me was that at the very beginning, one of the students asked that I define a concept. I didn´t know what to do, so I said we´d go over it later but at the end I did not return to that idea.
I belive it was very enriching trying to teach an actual case to a group of students already used to the method. Although It is very challenging!
