The mission is to demonstrate how digital multimedia can clarify key policy issues in international development.

For development practitioners, well-designed products can help frame policy alternatives and their consequences.

For students and teachers of development, the random access character of digital media allows teachers to call-up materials to illustrate a variety of points of view and respond flexibly to “teachable moments” as they arise.

In a country where 200 people die of AIDS every day, a new way of life is emerging.
Malawi, a small country in South East Africa, has reached a turning pont--it will either sink into unknown depths of despair and poverty or it must grow and change with AIDS as a catalyst. Lifecycles: a story of AIDS in Malawi is a 57 minute documentary that explores the themes of sex, witchcraft, poverty, death and religion in relation to AIDS.

With a soulful soundtrack from Bobby McFerrin, Lifecycles captures the intimate stories of people living with AIDS, traditional healers who claim to cure it, and prostitutes who put themselves at risk each night. Educated and powerful politicians speak frankly about losing 29 members of parliament to AIDS. Lifecycles is both earnest and uplifted as it uses the words of Malawians to reveal a nation for whom illness is mistaken for a witch's spell and physical love is dangerous.

Directed by Doug Karr and Sierra Bellows, cinematographer and sound recordist for DevCom's Starter Pack. Originally released on VHS, DevCom produced a DVD version in 2007 to make this excellent production more accessible. In line with DevCom's educational mission, the DVD includes a scene selecton menu keyed to themes useful in teaching.
